Unfurl my heart is a choral work about appreciating the sacred in all things. The poems are by Daniel Ladinsky, inspired by the 14th-century Persian poet, Hafiz. The first movement is about devotional love to a partner, whether of a different gender or the same gender, expressed through rich harmonies and simple rhythms. The second movement begins as a playful song while cutting vegetables in the kitchen (a virtuosic passage for the soloists), continues with dozens of the names of God (sung by the full choir in timeless fashion), and concludes with a lighthearted take on reincarnation (in dazzling 12-voice polyphony). The third movement ponders our role as caretakers of the Earth (with densely rich harmonies), continues with a charming interlude (for the Soprano soloist), and finishes by marveling at the divinity in all beings (with a long choral buildup).
