This piece belongs to the long tradition of sacred music that seeks moments of religious ecstasy, a lineage stretching from the visionary chants of Hildegard von Bingen to the radiant choral writing of Bruckner and the mystical soundworld of Messiaen. The opening features the choir and organ trading rhythmic patterns back and forth in tight harmonies. A contemplative middle section presents short melodies slowly finding their way through several tonalities. In the substantial closing section, the choir builds excitement by repeating their ostinato of “Alleluia!” while the organ takes the lead.
