for euphonium (or trombone) and pipe organ
“Kung Pao” (2003) is an exploration of several different grooves – some spacey, some robotic, and some downright funky. The feel of the music changes dramatically with each section, somewhat like in a baroque organ toccata. The sections are related mainly by their harmonic material. Towards the end of the piece, the performers clap and shout, in order to crank up the intensity.
Duration: 8 minutes
Premiere: Cody Coyne (euphonium) and Chappell Kingsland (organ)
Oct 4, 2003 - Rochester, New York
Notes for the organist:
The registration which I have provided is for a three-manual instrument of modest proportions, though the piece could certainly work on a larger or smaller organ. I suggest that the performer take my octave indications literally, (i. e. don't add 2's, 16's, or mixtures if I haven't called for them), but I encourage you to modify the stop choices to your liking. Also, feel free to add more registration changes whenever it enhances the musical flow.
"Fonds" means any combination of Flutes, Principals, and Strings (but not necessarily all at once!) "Man" means all manuals. The tremulant should be used when indicated if it adds a gospel touch.
