The Prelude explores symmetrical harmonic progressions and dynamic extremes, interrupted by brief solo statements (also melodically symmetrical). The tonality of the music fluctuates between definite key centers and transitional material. The Fugue is built on a curious subject which derives its harmonic content from a modification of the “blues scale”, with different voices often accenting different parts of the beat in an intricate and unpredictable manner. The quartet as a whole incorporates contemporary musical language into an ancient form.
